A call for concept ideas has been launched to develop the Mayor of London's vision for Waterloo

A call for concept ideas has been launched to develop the Mayor of London's vision for Waterloo that will see a new 'city square' developed in the area.

Last week Ken Livingstone published his Waterloo Opportunity Area Planning Framework – a blueprint to turn Waterloo into 'one of the world's leading cultural destinations'.

The first of the areas that the framework earmarked for redevelopment is in and around the BFI IMAX cinema roundabout, and the South Bank Employers Group has now launched a search for concepts for an extensive public realm.

An OJEU notice posted today states: 'This commission seeks to develop ideas on how to create a unified and quality public environment worthy of the area's national and international significance.

'The focus will be on improving accessibility and connections to transport interchanges; enhancing walking routes; and creating a world-class, welcoming and safe urban environment.'

The South Bank group claims the area on Waterloo Road is 'an eyesore, while the complex labyrinth of spaces, links and routes stretching from subway to street, squares and raised walkways is confusing and unwelcoming for pedestrians'.
