Holmes bags Aberdeen's Marischal College scheme

Scottish practice Holmes has landed the prize £80.4 million project to convert Aberdeen's Grade A-listed Marischal College building into the city council's new headquarters.
The scheme will see almost the complete demolition of the interior of Alexander Marshall MacKenzie's 1905 building –the second-largest granite building in the world.
Working with civil and strucutral engineerArup Scotland, the firm hopes to create more than 16,000m2 of 'modern' office space over four floors for around 1,300 council staff.
According to the practice, the scheme will also 'create 200 parking spaces, ensure the retention of all the granite elevations, and provide a new, predominantly open-plan interior of contemporary, hi-tech and sustainable design.'
Chairman of Holmes and project leader Harry Phillips said: 'We are delighted to have been appointed as architects for this truly exceptional project.
'The redevelopment of Marischal College is one of the most exciting schemes in the country and we look forward to delivering a magnificent new facility for Aberdeen City Council.'
The Marischal conversion will pave the way for the demolition of the existing 1960s St Nicholas House headquarters and the creation of a new civic square.
