Designer sought for south London market

A competition has been launched to find a design team to mastermind the overhaul of New Covent Garden Market, in Vauxhall, south London.

The Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) is looking for 'a highly qualified, multidisciplinary firm' to draw up plans to redevelop the site and create an 'economically sustainable market'.

The contest is the latest stage in a two-year programme set up to examine how the CGMA can replace its 30-year-old infrastructure 'with fresh, modern facilities' and builds on an existing viability study.

Brenda Dean, chairman of Covent Garden Market Authority, said: 'We want to ensure that our new market is designed to the highest possible standards.

'By procuring a highly skilled and specialist team we will be able to fully address the challenges we face and provide a market which will be an exceptional trading environment for our tenants and their customers.'

The deadline is 31 January 2008.
