Cartwright Pickard wins planning for mixed-use Doncaster scheme

Cartwright Pickard Architects has won planning permission for a £12 million mixed-use scheme

Cartwright Pickard Architects has won planning permission for this £12 million mixed-use hotel, retail and leisure scheme in the heart of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The six-storey development for the Tulip Inn hotelier group will house 118 bedrooms and will become the first new hotel to be built in the town for more than 40 years.

The two-block project on 'a prominent corner site' will also create 3,000m2 of space for shops and bars and is due for completion before the end of next year.

Backed by Basilton Properties, the building will boast a sedum roof and landscaped courtyard on the third floor and is to sit above a 'Saxon trench' which will be preserved during the construction.

Commenting on the scheme, practice director Peter Cartwright said: 'This project will significantly enhance a high-profile corner site in the centre of Doncaster and is a great opportunity to create a landmark building that is also in keeping with its location in a conservation area.

'The scheme is also the first town centre building to look towards the waterside, which is an important new area for development.'

The hotel is due to open in early 2009.
