More misery has been heaped on HKS Architects' plans for a new Liverpool Football Club stadium on Stanley Park.
It is understood that the football club and the council have yet to sign a 999-year lease granting Liverpool the right to build the stadium.
The news follows the announcement on Friday (29 August) that the £350 million scheme will be delayed by at least a year and, according to local newspaper reports, possibly a 'considerable' time longer.
Speaking to the LiverpoolDaily Post, city council leader Warren Bradley said: 'I would not want the council to sign the lease until such a time as we know that Liverpool FC can deliver [the stadium] 150 per cent.
'I have always had my reservations about their ability to raise the funds. I just wish they could sort themselves out. The Anfield and Breckfield areas have waited too long for this.'
The club's American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are blaming the credit crunch for the delays and have now claimed the stadium will not be open until the 2012/13 season.
