Herzog & de Meuron unveils 'stacked' tower in Manhattan
Herzog & de Meuron Architects has revealed these designs for its startling new 57-storey residential tower in New York.
The scheme, called 57 Leonard Street, is located in the Tribeca district of Lower Manhattan and will provide what the Swiss practice calls 'houses stacked in the sky'.
The condominium tower will be Herzog & de Meuron's first skyscraper, and will deliver 145 residences ranging in size from two- to five-bedroom apartments. There will also 10 penthouses.
Herzog & de Meuron's Jacques Herzog likened his approach to the design to Andy Warhol's. Herzog said: '[Warhol] used common Pop images to say something new. That is exactly what we are interested in: to use well-known forms and materials in a new way so that they become alive again.
The building is designed in conjunction with London-based artist Anish Kapoor and the developer, Alexico Group, hopes to have it occupied by Autumn 2010. Apartments range in price from $3.5 million (£2 million) to $33 million (£18 million).
