Landscape architect Gustafson Porter, the firm behind the troubled Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park (pictured), has won the competition to transform two squares in Woolwich, south-east London – one of which will feature a paddling pool.
The practice saw off almost 40 rivals from across the world to win the contract, which will be overseen by Greenwich Council, to renovate Beresford and General Gordon Squares, reports the Evening Standard.
The designs will feature space for farmers' markets, cafés and public art, and at the heart of General Gordon Square will be a paddling area.
The Diana Memorial Fountain was originally designed with a publicly accessible paddling area, but this was fenced off shortly after its opening in 2004 after three people slipped in the water and had to be taken to hospital.
The Woolwich project is expected to complete in 2011, and £600,000 has already been invested from the London Development Agency, Communities and Local Government and Transport for London towards the final budget, which is unknown.
