English Heritage on the hunt for Stonehenge architect – again

English Heritage (EH) has once again put the call out for an architect to design a new visitor centre at Stonehenge.

The move comes eight months after Denton Corker Marshall's £67 million scheme was ditched, following the abandonment of proposals for a bypass underneath the site.

This project will become the fourth design in 15 years.

It was thought that Ted Cullinan would return to the scheme 15 years after his original design for the centre was dropped. But this now seems unlikely, as EH has issued an OJEU notice for a scheme with a budget of between £15 and 20 million.

It is understood that EH is eager to get the project underway as quickly as possible, to take advantage of increased visitor numbers in the UK during 2012.

A shortlist of five architects will be drawn up following the initial expressions of interest.

To view the OJEU notice visit www.ted.europa.eu, reference number 2008/S 161-217951.

If they do intend to build a replica they should at least be aware that it was aligned north originally and at latitude 45N. The original observatory was also under 4m of water.

Do they seriously think they can get something designed, through planning, and built in only 4 years, given the ludicrous history of this project. EH need to get real!

£67,000,000???!!!

For one tenth of that I will build a perfect replica in a suitable location. As it'll be a replica, it won't need any protection so access can be permanent, constant, free and unfettered. The original can be sealed off for study by whoever studies such things - if there's any studying of it left to do. Sorted!

Sorry, that's TALLY. [Itchy Friday afternoon trigger-finger!]

I wonder who's paying for all this incompetence by English Heritage: what's the tallty of wasted consultants' fees to date, anyone know?
