UK-GBC launches Code for Sustainable Buildings consultation

The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has launched an 'industry-wide' consultation to look at what a new Code for Sustainable Buildings should contain.

With housing currently covered under the Code for Sustainable Homes, the UK-GBC now wants to examine core sustainability standards for non-domestic buildings.
 
The UK-GBC has timed its consultation, which will run until February, to coincide with the government's own forthcoming investigation into zero-carbon non-domestic buildings.
 
The task group will be chaired by UK-GBC chief executive Paul King (pictured) and its proposals are expected to be unveiled in March next year.
 
George Martin, head of sustainable development at construction company Willmott Dixon, said: 'Back in 2004 the then Sustainable Buildings Task Group, co-chaired by John Harman and Victor Benjamin, recommended that a single national Code for Sustainable Buildings be established.
 
'I supported the initiative then and was seriously disappointed when it was watered down to become the Code for Sustainable Homes. 
 
'Now is the time for the UK to set an example and deliver a national Code for Sustainable Buildings.'
