RMJM's Beijing Olympic media centre opens

RMJM's Beijing Olympic Green Convention Centre – the  largest media 'hub' in Olympic history – opens its doors to the world's Press today (25 July).

The 220,000m2 building will become the home to 20,0000  journalists, broadcasters, film crew and photographers during the 16-day-long Games, which start on 8 August.

After the games the huge, glazed structure, which will also house Olympic and Paralympic fencing and pentathlon pistol shooting events in its two sports halls, will be converted into the  National Convention Centre of China.

The building on the Beijing  Olympic Green Boulevard features 20m2 of 'specially treated transparent glass' to give film crew and photographers unobstructed views of other key Olympic landmark buildings.

Describing the practice's approach to the project RMJM's design director for Asia Scott Findley said: 'Part of the challenge of this assignment was to ensure that  the facility had a distinct and viable "second life" shortly after the close of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

'With this in mind, the design ensured that the facility can be retrofitted within a relatively short period of time without huge added expense.

He added: 'Post-Games, the complex will accommodate the Plenary Hall and the Convention & Exhibition Centre along with offices, retail, service apartments, a five-Star hotel and a business hotel.'
