Plans for the tallest tower in Scotland have been mothballed following the collapse of City Lofts, the developer behind Conran & Partners' £120 million Elphinstone skyscraper in Glasgow.
On Friday (4 July) it was confirmed that residential big-hitter City Lofts had gone into administration, meaning the future of the 134m-tall mixed-use project in Vincent Street looks increasingly bleak.
The news is the latest twist in the long-running saga surrounding the 40-storey tower which would have created 16,000m2 of office space, 208 apartments and additional retail space.
Late last year Conran & Partners was parachuted in to replace Scottish firm Cooper Cromar (whose proposals are pictured), the original practice on the scheme (AJ online 27.11.07), and proposed to completely redesign the tower – even though the plans had already been given the thumbs-up by Glasgow City Council back in 2004.
It is understood the practice's other scheme with City Lofts – the 32-storey St Paul's tower in Sheffield which is currently on site – is still progressing.
Conran & Partners refused to comment.
