Glenn Howells Architects and McDowell + Benedetti are to develop the masterplan for the redevelopment of JCB's Heavy Products site in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.
The two practices saw off competition from Bauman Lyons, DEGW, Letts Wheeler Architects and Robert Adam Architects to win the commission.JCB is relocating its Heavy Products business to a new £40 million plant next to the JCB World Parts Centre on the outskirts of the town, giving the company the chance to redevelop its town-centre site.
According to JCB chairman Anthony Bamford, the new scheme will be a mix of residential and retail space, and will 'contribute to the renaissance of Uttoxeter'.
An outline planning application has already been submitted to East Staffordshire Borough Council for the redevelopment, which will significantly reduce heavy-goods traffic in and around the town.
The win caps an excellent week for McDowell + Benedetti – the firm's new Castleford Bridge opened last Friday (4 July).
