CABE will continue to support Europan, the housing-design contest aimed at young architects, even though not one competition-winning scheme has been built in the UK to date.
Yesterday the commission called for site sponsors for next year's contest – Europan 10, which launches next January – in a bid to break the country's 14-year 'construction duck' (AJ 22.05.08).The contest will be open to two different types of site sponsors: those with the potential to accommodate 50-500 homes.
A CABE spokesman said: 'For a site sponsor with a confirmed project to deliver, Europan is an excellent way to set a benchmark for new housing and to explore ways to deliver sustainability and mixed use.
'For public-sector bodies needing to develop a vision for a local scheme, Europan can show how innovative design can best tackle site-specific challenges, such as creating sustainable communities as part of urban expansion.'
Potential sponsors need to make site submissions to CABE by 15 September.
