British practices make it on to Russian steel-house shortlist

Three British practices have made the 12-strong shortlist which will submit concept designs for sustainable steel-framed housing in Cherepovets, Russia.

Moxon Architects, Hugh Broughton Architects and ECD Architects, all London based, were selected along with nine others from more than 600 submissions from architects in 50 different countries.

The winner of the competition, organised by steel industry collaborative Living Steel, will be handed a 50,000 euro (£39,000) prize, as well as seeing their design come to reality.

According to the brief, the finalists will develop three to five housing styles, each around 120m2 and capable of withstanding Cherepovets' temperature range of +34C to -49C, all with a construction budget of 76,000 euros (£59,000).

Each of the finalists will be handed 3,000 euros (£2,400) and the winner will be announced on 29 June.
