Winner finally unveiled for Sheffield's Europan site

The fate of the undecided Sheffield Skye Edge site in the Europan 9 contest has finally been settled.

In January, the jury in the CABE-backed housing competition failed to find an outright victor for the hillside plot, which overlooks the South Yorkshire city, claiming that none of the submitted schemes had been good enough to win (AJ online 17.01.08).

Now North London-based practice Prewett Bizley Architects – originally named as joint runner-up in the contest along with a team made up of Sira Warneke, Adrian Truan, Jonathan Crossley, Gael Calvez, Matt Oliver, Tim Saxon, Samira Yacoubi and John Bell – has scooped the first prize.

Both second-placed teams were asked by the judges, which included David Rudlin from Urbed, to go back to the drawing board and 'significantly' work up their initial proposals.

Prewett Bizley will draw up more detailed plans for around 140 new houses on the site, with a view to going out to public consultation in the summer.

However, despite the victory, the future of the scheme is not yet secured, as the local authority still needs to find a developer to take it on.

Karl Tupling, director of housing at Sheffield City Council said: 'We want to increase the number of high-quality homes in Sheffield that meet the needs of the community [and] we are now looking for a top-class developer to help us to make the best possible use of this fantastic site.'
