Pier Arts Centre designer Reiach and Hall could return to Orkney

Reiach and Hall could be set to make a dramatic return to Stromness in the Orkney Islands after being shortlisted in the contest to redevelop the town's pierhead.

The Edinburgh-based practice, which won last year's RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for the Best Building in Scotland with its Pier Arts Centre in the town (pictured), is lined up against Graeme Massie Architects and Malcolm Fraser Architects.
 
The shortlisted practices will look primarily at how to rework the public space around the waterfront site and have been asked to draw up concepts designs which will 'make a significant addition to the rich architectural fabric of Stromness'.
 
Speaking about making the final three, Reiach and Hall's Neil Gillespie said: 'We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the pierhead redevelopment; we have been holding our breath in hope for months! Stromness has become very dear to us.'
 
He added: 'The project, if handled with respect and sensitivity, could contribute greatly to what is already a magical place.'
 
The designs will go on public display in July and a winner is expected to be announced shortly after.
