Turbines turn on Atkins' Bahrain World Trade Center

One of the most audacious attempts at on-site generation has come a step nearer reality in Bahrain, with the three 29m-diameter turbine blades all turning successfully for the first time on the Atkins-designed World Trade Center.

Sat between the two sail-shaped towers of the centre, the blades are estimate to be able to produce between 11 and 15 per cent of the building's energy requirement when operational - which is expected to be about half the time.

Look below to see them in operation.
