The Prince's Foundation has been given the green light to build a 'traditional' new town outside Plymouth, in Devon.

South Hams District Council gave the new 5,500-home town, masterplanned by the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment, the go-ahead last week.

Called Sherford, the scheme will create a community that, according to the Foundation, is based on 'the logic of a traditional market town'.

Backed by developer Red Tree, the new town will provide more than 67,000m2 of business and commercial space, three primary schools and one secondary school.

The Prince's Foundation's chief executive Hank Dittmar said: 'It's a credit to all involved in the Sherford project that the South Hams and Plymouth now stand to inherit an outstanding example of traditional urban design that is bound to positively benefit generations of people to come.'
