City Hall reopens after flood

Whoever becomes London mayor will be relieved to discover they will not be ankle deep in water when the winner is officially announced on Friday (2 May). 

The lights are now back on in Foster + Partners' City Hall building which was closed on Sunday morning,  a water main shattered in Tooley Street causing the closure of an electricity substaion.

Around seven million litres of water burst out of the broken pipe close to Tower Bridge, causing the Greater London Authority (GLA) headquarters –nicknamed the 'egg'- to close its doors.

The GLA has now confirmed that there was no water ingress to the building.

Although it had to look at an alternative venue for the electoral announcements, everything is now back on track.

The flood, which caused Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital NHS Trust to postpone 21 operations, also resulted in power loss to thousands of properties.
