Architects design vertical farms

Chicken farms on the 12th floor of a residential block? Fields of corn on the 47th storey of a Toronto skyscraper? Welcome to the world of vertical farming.

Just weeks after the AJ revealed that green guru Ken Yeang is designing a food-producing building – or urban farm – a host of architects have revealed their designs for vertical farming.

The four projects have been compiled by www.weburbanist.com, but some are more believable than others.

Chris Jacobs and Dr Dickson Despommier ofColumbiaUniversityhave produced this vertical farm that produces more energy than the building requires.

Pierre Sartoux of Atelier SOA created this more aesthetically pleasing urban farm, which includes glazing that opens and closes to admit sunlight.

US firm Mithun Architects has designed a vertical farm for downtownSeattle, which includes residential and commercial elements and even a chicken farm.

Canadian architect Gordon Graff has developed this ambitious proposal called the Sky Farm. The 48-storey building would provide hundreds of thousands of square metres of farm land to feedTorontoresidents.
