As well as beating Avanti Architects, CTM Architects, local firm Hazle McCormack Young and Stanton Williams, the practice also pipped London practice FAT – reversing last week's result in the Bentley Library competition, which saw Panter Hudspith named as a runner-up while FAT won.

The contest was run by RIBA South East for developer Rydell Properties, together with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.

The jury was chaired by Robert Adam of Robert Adam Architects, who described the winning scheme as 'a nicely-controlled, restrained scheme of excellent quality'.

Sitting opposite the town hall on the junction of Mount Pleasant Road and Church Road, the brick and stone mixed-use scheme will house – among other things – a hotel and two new public squares.
