Prasad and Alsop all a-flutter with birdbox designs

In case you were wondering how Radio 4's Today Programme would cover National Nest Box Week, the AJ can put your mind at rest

Two of architecture's finest, Sunand Prasad and Will Alsop, were wheeled out to design a birdbox and then invited on air to discuss the construction thereof.

This listener was alarmed to hear the president of the RIBA say that 'my boxes are quite large' and that he 'would like to see lots of birds going in and out of them'. Happily Sunand wasn't referring to his choice of underwear but the constuction of his birdbox.

Alsop opted for a conceptual approach, while Prasad proposed a design in a more advanced stage. Prasad's birdbox is designed for either single or multiple occupancy, depending on the sociability of its occupants. An outer layer of slippery acrylic makes it difficult for predators, marauding squirrels for example, to disturb the residents.

National Nest Box Week runs from 14-21 February.

Prasad's design appears to be heavily influenced by the weaver bird's nest... but I wonder whether they'd prefer the original rather than something made of acrylic?

Imagine the wingspan required to get Alsop airborne. Terrifying.
