Kaplicky bags Czech hat-trick

Future Systems' Jan Kaplicky has been signed up to design three key buildings for the historic town of Brno, in his native country the Czech Republic.
Kaplicky, who met the Brno mayor, Roman Onderka, on Monday (18 February), has agreed to design an eco tower and concert hall for the city, as well as a hotel for a private client.
The architect said he was honoured to be working in the town, which boasts Mies van der Rohe's Villa Tugendhat and which can lay claim as being the place where the Bren Gun was invented – 'we saved democracy here', said Kaplicky.
Citing Villa Tugendhat and a number of pavilions built in the '20s, Kaplicky said he would 'put Brno back on the modern architecture track'.
Kaplicky, who next week learns the fate of his National Library building in Prague, also told the AJ that the mayor of another Czech city had approached him with a view to him becoming its design tsar.
