Zaha Hadid Architects has won a competition to design a new museum for Michigan State University.
Hadid saw off stiff competition to win the project, including the likes of Coop Himmelb(l)au, Morphosis, KPF and Randall Stout Architects.
The new $26 million (£13 million) Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum will be the second US project for the Pritzker Prize winner after she completed the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati in 2003.
Hadid said: 'Art Museums are centers for the exchange of ideas, showcasing the art that feeds the cultural life of the community. I believe we can create buildings that evoke original experiences, inspire people and make them excited about new ideas.
'The sculptural folds of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum's design and the enigmatic qualities of its steel and glass surface follow a coherent formal logic, offering a sense of unlimited possibilities.'
The 4,000m2 building will comprise of three levels, including a basement. It will be constructed of steel and concrete with an aluminum and glass exterior and be adjoined by an expansive outdoor sculpture garden to the east.
Work is expected to begin in the autumn of this year with completion scheduled for 2010.
The scheme is located within an emerging cluster of tall buildings close to the city's Palace of Culture.
