The threat of recession has failed to deter West Properties from pressing ahead with its huge Ian Simpson-designed, five-tower Owen Street development in Manchester.
The scheme, which was given the go-ahead by the city council last week, will sit at the heart of the Great Jackson Street Framework, close to the River Medlock, and will range in height from 13-49 storeys.
According to the developer, work will start on site in November, creating nearly 1,100 flats, 100 serviced apartments, a 209-bedroom hotel and a 3,345m2 leisure facility.
The plans also include a new river walkway, raised gardens 'suspended above the shops', restaurants, a new medical surgery and offices.
Donal Mulryan, chief executive of West Properties, said: 'We're creating an all-encompassing city-centre destination with cutting-edge architecture and much-needed public space.
'Manchester needs world-class developments like this if the city is to compete on the international stage.'
He added: 'We must get the right mix of residential, commercial and leisure space to drive the regeneration of the area.'
