Designer sought for new-look Birmingham New Street Station

A competition has been launched to find concept designs for a new external facade and atrium space for Birmingham New Street Station.

The New Street Gateway partnership is looking for expressions of interest to create a 'strong architectural language' for the building's exterior.

Network Rail project director Martin Chambers, said: 'This is an excellent opportunity to create a design that lives up to the station's status as one of the most important rail hubs in the country. 

'Its design will need to act on both a functional and symbolic level and reflect the aspirations of modern-day Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region.'

A provisional £30 million will be set aside for the work, but the project is yet to receive more than £100 million in government funding that will ensure it goes ahead.

A shortlist of six designers will be drawn up, each of which will receive an honorarium of £10,000.

London-based practice John McAslan and Partners is acting as lead architect on the delivery of the whole of the £550 million station.
