Atkins reveals plans for Bristol cable-car network

Atkins has released designs for a cable-car transit system for Bristol, which would give passengers views of Brunel's Temple Meads station and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The planned route will also take in the city's historic docks and allow views of Brunel's SS Great Britain, docked in Bedminster.

Atkins said the scheme would be 'similar to the Harbour Cable Car in Barcelona, Spain – known as the Transbordador Aeri – which carries 400,000 people a year and operates on 315ft-high steel-lattice masts'.

Martin Pease, director of Atkins and the man behind the proposed scheme, said the cable cars 'would not be a viable mass-transit system to solve Bristol's traffic problems, but could be used by local people to get around and would provide a unique visitor experience to the city'.

He added: 'Bristol is a city which benefits from both fantastic topography and beautiful and interesting views.

'Imagine soaring over the city docks, viewing the historic heart of Bristol and seeing the stunning Avon Gorge come into view with the magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge.'
