Communities and Local Government has named Bob Kerslake as the first chief executive of the new Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
Currently Sheffield Council chief executive, Kerslake will step into the new role in March 2008 despite the agency not running until April 1 2009.
Kerslake said: 'I am delighted to be taking on this uniquely challenging and demanding post at the centre of the government's agenda.
'It is vitally important that everyone has access to a decent home at a price they can afford, in a place where they want to live and work, and I am looking forward to leading the Homes and Communities Agency to make this a reality.'
The new HCA will fuse two agencies, English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation, to oversee the delivery of three million homes by 2020, promised by Prime Minster Gordon Brown.
