Architects sought to overhaul Princess Diana's former home

Kensington Palace in west London, the former residence of Princess Diana, is hunting a team of architects to design various new-build, refurbishment and landscaping projects.

Two contracts, worth a total of £1 million, have been advertised for future improvements to the state apartments at the Hyde Park palace.
 
Up to 12 practices will be invited by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) – the independent charity which manages Kensington Palace – to tender for the contracts running from early 2008 to March 2012.
 
According to HRP, architects will be expected to 'provide architectural services for design of new works and refurbishment of a scheduled ancient monument'.
 
Landscape architects, meanwhile, will 'provide a setting for the monument and create a public open space and public realm'.

Experience of providing landscape architectural services 'adjacent to historic buildings within historic landscapes', is essential adds HRP.
 
Furthermore, the winning firms must demonstrate expertise in developing public spaces, coupled with 'respect for existing landscape, architecture and building materials'.
