Zaha Hadid included on Stoke bus station shortlist

Zaha Hadid Architects has been named on an impressive six-strong shortlist to design a new £12 million city centre bus station in Stoke

The Pritzker Prize winner, working with Adams Kara Taylor and Max Fordham, is joined among the finalists by Wilkinson Eyre with Arup; John McAslan + Partners with Mott MacDonald and AECOM; Grimshaw with Arup; BDP with Mott MacDonald and AA Projects; and Austin-Smith:Lord with Curtins, Hilson Moran and JMP.

Launched by Stoke-on-Trent City Council early this year, the contest to find a multidisciplinary design team to replace the ageing modernist Hanley bus station (left) attracted 43 formal bids.

The scheme is part of the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership’s wider revamp project for the city, which includes the East West Shopping Centre, designed by Benoy.

Council cabinet member for regeneration Brian Ward said: ‘It is exciting to see how much interest has been shown in the development, with expressions of interest from top design teams across the country.

‘The bus station will be the first thing many visitors see as they arrive in the city centre. We want a design that we can be proud of – an inviting and modern building fit for the 21st century.’
