Zaha Hadid and Peter Cook complete Viennese Uni schemes

Peter Cook’s CRAB studio and Zaha Hadid have both completed buildings on Vienna’s University of Economics & Business £412 million campus

A ‘centrepiece’ library by Zaha Hadid Architects and an administration block and rector’s office designed by Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham (CRAB studio) sit alongside a lecture hall by site masterplanners BUSArchitecture, departmental blocks by Estudio Carme Pinos, a postgraduate ‘academy’ by Eduardo Arroyo and a student centre by Hitoshi Abe.

Hadid’s five-storey, 42,000m² library and learning centre - which also houses a café, offices, clubroom, a bookshop and an auditorium - was won in competition ahead of rival proposals from Thom Mayne’s US practice Morphosis and Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas in late 2008.

The €492 million ( £412 million) campus, between the Vienna Messe (trade-fair grounds) and Prater Park at Welthandelsplatz, officially welcomes the first of its 24,000 students tomorrow (4 October).
