WTC ten years on: Ground Zero today
Structural engineer Cantor Seinuk chief executive Ahmad Rahimian says 1WTC had to be designed by preempting the new, post-9/11 building codes. “It was one of the major challenges as when we started the design, there were a number of new codes due to be put in place, and we have finished with a new code,” he says. The tapering design, which means the apex and the bottom of the building are both squares but the halfway point is a perfect octagon, is efficient and wind, earthquake and hurricane resistant, he says.
