Work starts on Bond Bryan's 'hotel' school

[First look + plans] Construction is underway on the UK’s first hotel school designed by Bond Bryan for the University of Essex in Colchester

The £5.6 million Edge Hotel School scheme includes extending and refurbishing the 18th Century Grade II* listed Wivenhoe House.

According to the practice the completed 1,275 m² country house hotel ‘will be the first of its kind to be managed and run entirely by student practitioners on work based degree programmes’.

Bond Bryan director Jeff Stibbons said: ‘The design combines the functions of a 4 Star hotel with 40 bedrooms, a one hundred cover brasserie and a fine dining restaurant with an educational academy.”

The existing house will be restored to provide the function rooms and executive suites while the new extension will house further bedrooms, the brasserie and a conference suite.

Project director Professor Peter Jones said: ‘For the first time in the UK hospitality sector, students as aspiring managers will learn while working within every aspect of a fully-functioning hotel as they develop their professional skills, knowledge and understanding.’

The scheme is due to complete in March 2012.
