Win tickets to Alsop sermon on how art springs from idleness

The AJ is offering five pairs of tickets to hear Will Alsop deliver a special School of Life ‘Sunday sermon’ praising boredom as a key to creativity

The ALL Design-founder will deliver the non-religious lecture on Sunday 23 September in London’s Conway Hall as part of a series of events hosted the Alain de Botton-founded School of Life enterprise.

The first five readers to comment below win the free tickets. Just share one example, for or against, Alsop’s argument that boredom can inspire creativity.

In his talk, Alsop is expected to talk up the ‘luxurious, dreaming kind of boredom’ which exists when an artist or designer is forced to sit and look at their work or process.

This boredom, he will argue, is ‘vital to creating something fresh’.

He will explain how the everyday fear of empty time – which today sees managers fearing unstructured workplaces and parents keeping children busy with holiday camps and after school clubs – is risking dull and uncreative lives for many.
