Wilkinson Eyre scoops Melbourne Uni job

[FIRST LOOK] Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Sinclair Knight Merz Architects & Engineers have landed the prize project to design a new building for Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.

The ‘landmark’, six-storey block on the University’s Hawthorn Campus will ‘float’ above a retained Victorian façade at street level.

Hailed as ‘a centre of excellence in manufacturing innovation’, the building’s facade was conceived as a series of ‘sculpted vertical fins’ which Wilkinson Eyre claims will ‘achieve optimum solar shading’ and was ‘inspired by engine turbine blades’.

Stafford Critchlow, director of Wilkinson Eyre, said: ‘We’re very excited to have the opportunity to design a higher education building in Australia, and we look forward to working with Sinclair Knight Merz to bring our experience on university projects in the UK to a new context.’

Sinclair Knight Merz and Wilkinson Eyre have collaborated on several schemes, including a series of sports and infrastructure projects in Australia and the UK.
