Wilkinson Eyre finishes Bath 'busometer'

Wilkinson Eyre has completed its controversial transport interchange in Bath

Dubbed ‘the busometer’, the £12 million bus terminal replaced the art deco Churchill House, provoking a storm of protests, including a petition signed by more than 10,000 objectors.

The glass, steel and stone building has 16 bus and coach bays and originally won planning permission in 2003.

Describing its approach to the project, the practice said that ‘instead of trying to emulate the traditional architecture of Bath’ it had used contemporary materials ‘to create a contrast with the surrounding buildings and make a composition of the new and the old.’

A spokesman for the firm said: ‘The basic diagram of the scheme relocates the bus station to the same side of the street as the original Grade II*-listed Bath Spa railway station by Brunel, improving the visual connection and safe interchange between the two vital transport nodes. 

‘This connection will be completed through the introduction of a new civic plaza in the second phase of the redevelopment.’

The bus station is the first phase of a wider project to connect the City’s bus station with its train station. A second phase will see the refurbishment of the train station, which includes opening up previously hidden station vaults.
