White Arkitekter scoops planning for Southend pier scheme

[First look + plans] Scandanavian practice White Arkitekter has won planning permission for this £3 million cultural centre at the end of Southend pier in Essex

Designed with UK-based architect Sprunt, the scheme creates the longest pier in the world and features a 364m² centre, seating for 185 people, an artists’ studio and a café.

Outside the practice has drawn up plans for an amphitheatre-like, south-facing terrace with seating for up to 100 people.

The scheme has been scaled back from White Arkitekter’s original competition-winning scheme which promised ‘destinations’ every 500 metres along the pier and an outdoor theatre with a capacity of 500 people.
