Weston Williamson unveils four-runway Luton Airport vision

Weston Williamson has joined the race to solve the London’s aviation bottleneck with a proposal to transform Luton Airport into a four-runway hub

The independent proposal follows hot on the heels of Make’s bid to enlarge Stansted into a new Crossrail-linked mega-hub.

Weighing in against Foster and Partners’ high-profile Thames Estuary airport vision and a floating airstrip proposal by Gensler, the airport redevelopment proposals are the latest offers on the table for the government which is facing increasing pressure to find a quick solution to the runway shortage after deferring a decision until 2015.

Weston Williamson’s scheme would bring Crossrail 2into the heart of a new, four-runway Luton – with journeys of just 25 minutes to the capital.

Already served by Thameslink and the M1 motorway, the single-runway Bedfordshire airportis the ‘sensible location’ for the UK’s largest airport hub, claimed practice director Chris Williamson.

He said: ‘A new four runway airport at Luton is by far the best solution. Thameslink and the new north south Crossrail 2 would link directly to the new terminals with journeys directly to Euston in 25 minutes .New junctions to the M1 and the A1 offer excellent connectivity.

He added: ‘Anyone coming from the North or Midlands can get there by car or the planned improved train links. Why would you choose Stansted stuck out in the East of the country? It has a good spur link to Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale but nowhere else.’
