Video: How we created Canada Water Library
CZWG Architects has released a new mini-documentary about its recently opened Canada Water Library
The five minute film features co-founder Piers Gough of CZWG Architects, Hanif Kara of structural engineers AKT II and Southwark Council’s Head of Culture, Libraries, Learning and Leisure, Adrian Whittle
The three discuss how the library came about, why it is the shape it is, how the structure was able to realise this design, and how it has been received by the local community. The film was produced by Living Projects and commissioned by CZWG Architects, AKT II and Southwark Council.
A spokesperson for CZWG said: “Sometimes still photography is not quite enough to capture the life and mobility of the building, its surroundings and the unusual ways it plays with light and space.
“With the focus now on online publications rather than print, CZWG has embraced the new opportunities that film brings. Audiences can learn so much from a well-produced short film, and can use the films in flexible ways - whether for online screening, conferences or presentations. The very technique of representation aspires to life and motion, which has been inherent in the design concept of the Library.”
“Tim Crocker’s stunning architectural videography combines beautifully composed architectural frames for buildings, people’s movement through spaces and stunning detailed shots of the intricacies of the structure and materials. Combined with Richard Mullane’s direction and editing, the viewer is immersed into a compelling story about the impact that great design can have on places and how it can lift the spirits of communities - enabling a better experience of the living building itself.”
“There is a magic to libraries, a realm of ideas. Our design is all strongly coloured at ground floor, about richness, joining together and meeting. Then you go up the staircase and it gets quieter and quieter - you go into a kind of cloud zone in the sky where you can think, have ideas and take ideas from books and other sources. Our idea is of the library not as a stuffy depository, but as a place of dreaming and ideas” – Piers Gough, CZWG Architects
