University lift off for Space Group in Durham

Newcastle-based architects the Space Group has won the go-ahead for this new £35 million humanities centre at Durham University

Just 500m from the Durham Castle UNESCO World Heritage site, the building will house a new library, law school, offices and student services.

The practice worked with locally based PH Partnership on the scheme, which was recently approved by Durham Council and aims to provide ‘world-class facilities’ for students at the third oldest university in England.

Space Group associate director Andrew Grounsell said: ‘We have been able to create an open plan and spacious work environment responsive to modern flexible working patterns that will act as a catalyst for changes on the University’s working practices.’

Durham University vice chancellor Professor Christopher Higgins added: ‘The bold design will ensure a landmark building in keeping with the University’s commitment to develop its estate with buildings of significant architectural merit and to the highest environmental standards.’
