UK's tallest residential tower stumbles at first hurdle

A decision on Squire and Partners’ planning application for a 75-storey tower in London’s Docklands has been unexpectedly put back

On Thursday night (13 June) Newham Council’s planning committee deferred its decision over the 239 metre-high proposal, which had been recommended for approval by officers, blaming concerns over the skyscraper’s height, scale, density, tenure mix and open space provision.

In a statement the council said: ‘The Committee was minded not to support the officers’ recommendation to approve the application for City Pride.

‘The application was therefore deferred to allow officers to prepare a further report having regard to the Committee’s position.’

The residential scheme replaces an earlier 63-storey proposal by Foster and Partners for the Westferry Road site, occupied by the now-closed City Pride pub.

Submitted to local authority Tower Hamlets earlier this year, Squire’s scheme features around 860 residential units and 84 serviced apartments.

The tower would be shorter than Renzo Piano’s 95-storey Shard which recently became the UK’s tallest building. It would also be six metres shorter than César Pelli & Associates’ One Canada Square nearby which held the title for 19 years.

Foster’s scheme (pictured below) hit the rocks in 2011 after Irish property company and project backer Glenkerrin went into receivership. The plot was subsequently sold on and is now being developed by Chalegrove Properties.
