Udderly charming - Designscape shows off Somerset dairy

[First look + plans] Bath-based Designscape Architects has revealed these pictures of its completed Hill Farm Dairy project in Somerset

The practice was asked by a new goats cheese making company to design a barn and dairy production facility in the village of Stawley.

According to the studio, the project ‘reflects both the ethos of the client company and the site’ and appears on the hillside plot ‘as a quality handmade product, using natural materials and low energy solutions’.

The barn and milking parlour sit above the dairy, with cold storage and maturing areas pushed back into the slope under the parlour.

This arrangement means milk can flow by gravity from parlour to dairy, avoiding pumping and ‘preserving the quality of the milk’.
