Three developers shortlisted to redevelop Olympic Village

The names of three developers bidding to convert the Olympic village into housing and build 2,000 new homes on the east London site have been revealed

Delancey with Qatari Diar, Hutchinson Whampoa and Wellcome Trust are in the race to take over ownership and management of the 27 hectare east London site from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) in the summer of 2013.

Built to accommodate athletes during the games, the village’s residential buildings will be reconfigured as private housing in line with their original architects’ legacy plans.

Up to 1,439 apartments will become private housing while a further 1,379 will be operated as ‘affordable’ homes by Triathlon Homes.

The contract-winning developer will also have the rights to build a further 2,000 homes on the site which benefits a string of infrastructure improvements including a new ‘polyclinic’ and the Allford Hall Monaghan Morris-designed Chobham Academy.

A spokesperson for the ODA said the job for architects to design new homes was potentially still up for grabs.

They said: ‘The plans for reconfiguring the new homes being built are already in place. This post-Games transformation work is interior changes – removing any temporary partition walls and installing kitchens etc.

‘The [investor] will also acquire the future plots but these would be developed at a much later date so it is too early to give details of how and when the future plots would be developed and what architects would be involved.’

Shortlisted developers contacted were unable to supply the names of architects working on their bids.

Dennis Hone, ODA chief executive, added: ‘The quality of the three shortlisted parties is a vote of confidence in the Olympic Village, demonstrating both UK and international interest in first-class British property.

‘The Village will deliver the best of city living all in one place with high-quality new homes joined by education and healthcare facilities, new parklands, public squares and open space. Securing best value and the best legacy owner for the Village will be key.’

A winner is expected to be announced this summer.

-       1,439 legacy homes spread across 11 residential plots to create a new neighbourhood for east London in one of the best connected parts of the capital

-       A new neighbourhood that spans over 27 hectares of land, equivalent to St James Park, with wide tree lined streets and open public spaces

-       More than 10 hectares of new parks and open space interspersed with cycling facilities and recreation spaces

-       Landscaped courtyard areas with gardens and play areas for people to relax and enjoy living in London’s newest neighbourhood

-       Located next to the 2.5km2 Olympic Park that will deliver 250 acres of legacy parklands to create the largest urban public park created in the UK for over a century including wetlands, woodlands, wildlife areas and riverside gardens
