Taylor Young completes twisted black-box theatre

[First look + plans] Taylor Young has unwrapped this 120-seat black-box theatre in a conservation area in Kendal

The Kendal College Technical Studio project is the latest in a series of commission for the college designed by the practice.

Clad in local Lake District slate, the £1 million steel-framed theatre is effectively a twisted cube, its shape reflecting ‘the various lay-lines and sloping topography of the site’.

The architect’s view by project architect Sue Chadwick

The model was critical to the successful delivery of the project (see below) - drawings could not convey the nature of the twist. The model travelled the country between sub-contractors to sub-contractor. It was the only way we could ensure all stakeholders understood the principles of the design. Probably the most useful and well used model we have ever produced.
