Studio Egret West lands Skylon contest

Studio Egret West has won the contest to masterplan a new business area south of Hereford, dubbed ‘Skylon Park’

In February this year (see AJ 27.02.2012) RRA Architects revealed plans to build a half-sized 50 metre-tall Skylon replica at the entrance to the Hereford Enterprise Zone.

The original cigar-shaped 100-metre tall Skylon, designed by Powell and Moya, was built in Hereford by engineering firm Painter Bros.

Studio Egret West will create an overarching framework plan for the 72 hectare former munitions factory site as well as establishing ‘architectural and landscape guidelines to promote innovative and sustainable design solutions’.

Practice director David West said: ‘Skylon Park needs to become an important part of the City of Hereford, not just hidden on the periphery. One of our key aims is to get as many people as possible to engage with the enterprise zone, children and adults alike. It is only by doing this that we will attract the next generation of entrepreneurs to choose Hereford as their base. Skylon Park will provide the setting for scientific, technological, industrial, architectural and artistic ingenuity; A landscape of experimentation, discovery and demonstration.”
