Stirling Prize 2013: bookies make Niall McLaughlin's chapel favourite

Bookmaker William Hill is backing Niall McLaughlin to win his first ever RIBA Stirling Prize with his Bishop Edward King Chapel, Oxfordshire

Hailed as ‘an incredible showcase for modern British craftsmanship’, the scheme has been made favourite to win the 2013 prize at 9/4.

Alison Brooks Architects’ ‘masterful’ be:Newhall housing scheme and heneghan peng architects’ ‘highly imaginative’ Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre are also highly rated by the bookies - both being offered at 3/1.

However the £36.5 million overhaul of Sheffield’s 1960s Park Hill estate (Phase One) is not rated by the bookmakers and has been named as the rank outsider with enticing odds of 9/1.

Turf accountant Paddy Power has also made McLaughlin’s chapel its outright favourite (7/4 on to win), nudging up heneghan peng’s Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre into a clear second spot with odds of 9/4.

Intriguingly the scheme AJ readers voted their favourite to make the shortlist, The Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC), Belfast by Hackett Hall McKnight, didn’t make the shortlist (see AJ 10.05.2012).
