Stirling Prize 2011: Hopkins' velodrome wins 'People's vote'

According to a poll run by the RIBA, 63 per cent of voters selected the London 2012 landmark as their favourite building from the schemes shortlisted to win the UK’s most prestigious architecture accolade.

The official winner of the prize, which is run in association with the Architects’ Journal and Benchmark, will be announced tomorrow night (1 October) at a ceremony at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham. The event will be broadcast as a special edition of BBC TWO’s The Culture Show on Sunday 2 October, presented by Kevin McCloud.

An Gaeleras, O’Donnell and Tuomey’s Irish cultural centre in Derry, came second in the RIBA-organised public poll, bagging 25 per cent of the vote.

Hopkins’ £90 million showstopper remains the bookies’ favourite, with William Hill offering odds of just 11/8 on a velodrome victory.
