Stallan-Brand has drawn up detailed plans for a new student campus in the well-known Speirs Lock area of Glasgow, overlooking the Forth and Clyde Canal
The emerging practice has ‘refreshed’ an earlier masterplan by 7N for a commercial led scheme and proposed a 400 bedroom project for graduates and post graduates.
The first phase features a ‘highly visible’ 12-storey corten steel tower.
The architect’s view
The Speirs Locks area of North Glasgow has a extraordinary history due to its direct relationship with the great Victorian waterway the Forth and Clyde
Canal which connects the Irish Sea with the North Sea and Edinburgh with Glasgow.
Since the previous plan was prepared at the height of the market the location has become increasingly attractive for both local and national arts companies. The original plans
envisaged commercial proposals have in fact given way to more opportunistic education and artistic uses to become a location that is clearly becoming a creative quarter.
Our proposals seek to consolidate and reinforce the areas accidental, ad hoc character by introducing a series of new public spaces, improved pedestrian connections and alternate uses ranging from managed work spaces, a new canal side cafe and high quality student residential
accommodation for both under and post graduate students.
The urban and environmental challenges are significant given the sites weak urban connectivity, complex topography, and high visibility. Proposals place an emphasis on linkages both North and South and East and West through the location. Unlike Glasgow’s East End which has massively benefited
from transformational infrastructure investment in support of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow North has been less fortunate. Both Stallan and Brand designed and led the 2014 Commonwealth Games Village now on site.
A recent ‘flowers’ project has however started the process of linking the area back to the City through the creation of a major public art works that sees gigantic flowers connect one side of Glasgow’s ring road with the other. Stallan-Brand propose to continue this with a new Avenue of the arts that leads to
a new campus square that will address the Glue factory arts venue.
The sites levels are a design opportunity especially the environment along the canal towpath which sits high above the City and provides a spectacular opportunity to appreciate the West End of Glasgow’s skyline.

and amenity the students are afforded. The practice are clear that education clients are increasingly
demanding much higher standards of accommodation compared to recent volume developer student
‘warehouse’ developments scattered across the country.
