Squire and Partners bags Paddington planning

[First look + plans] Squire and Partners has won the go-ahead for this mixed-use housing scheme on an ‘underused’ 1960s car park in Paddington

The 60-home, Chiltern Street scheme for Galliard subsidiary Triland features two blocks - a smaller four storey structure and a ‘stepped’ eight storey residential building - opposite Paddington Gardens in Marylebone, west London.

The developer bought the plot from Westminster City Council in April 2010 for an estimated £30 million.

The architect’s view

The smaller block, facing Chiltern Street, responds to its context with a series of narrow bays framed in stone, repeated along the street to relate to the terraces opposite. Within the crisp stone bays, coloured acrylic fins set within aluminium frames span between floors, giving the building’s exterior colour, texture and depth. This western block houses a health and fitness club, retail unit and residential apartments.
At the eastern end of the site, a separate residential block adopts a stepped approach, both in plan and in elevation. The height of the development steps up and down, while the building line steps back and forth to Paddington Gardens.
The crisp stone facade is broken up into a series of ‘major’ and ‘minor’ vertical bays - the ‘major’ bays run the entire depth of the eastern block and contain balconies at the end of every floor.
Between these are the ‘minor’ bays, which are always lower and set back from the facade, and also feature the coloured acrylic fins seen on the eastern elevation to add colour and richness to the elevation.
