SOM bags China super-tall tower

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has won an international competition to design the Greenland Group Suzhou Center, in Wujiang, China

The 358-metre high tower will accommodate offices, service apartments, a hotel and retail over a 37,000m² site.

Located prominently along Taihu Lake in the Jiangsu province of China, the 75-level building features a 30-storey operable window to help drive its environmental performance.

SOM design director Ross Wimer said: ‘Like a high-performance car, the digital modelling of aerodynamics was critical to the shaping of the building.

‘The design team included structural and mechanical engineers from the very beginning and their input helped to define all aspects of the tower.’

The project is the SOM Chicago office’s sixth project in China for client Greenland Group.

These include Zifeng Tower in Nanjing and the 56-storey Zhengzhou Greenland Plaza in Zhengzhou.

SOM has an office in London, as well as four in the US, two in China, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Mumbai.
